Scientists: The ‘Tortured Artist’ Is a Real Thing
For years, researchers have wondered why exactly the female orgasm exists. It plays no part in reproduction and is functionally redundant, unlike in many other animals. But scientists now say that the experience is an afterthought of evolution, left from our ape ancestors.
Written by Anita Moon The theory of carbon dating is interesting, but there are inherent problems with the presumptions upon which it is based. Used to estimate the age of ancient artifacts and human and animal remains, radiocarbon dating is regarded by many as one of the miracles of modern science. Some, however, have serious doubts about the credibility of this technique. Radiocarbon dating works by comparing the amount of normal carbon that is found in a sample with the amount of radioactive carbon.
Both carbon and radioactive carbon are found in every living organism. While carbon is quite prevalent in these organisms, radioactive carbon is present only in tiny amounts. Some contend that the relative ratios of carbon and radioactive carbon that are found on the earth have remained constant over time and that, using known rates of decay; we can estimate age on the basis of changes in this ratio in a particular artifact or remains.
Radioactive carbon is absorbed by living organisms throughout their entire life. When the organism dies that absorption stops and the radioactive carbon begins to break down.

After making it all the way through a MS in marine ecology, it finally got through his thick skull that he preferred drawing and painting animals to researching them. The obvious solution, at least in his mind, was to cram a bunch of drawings into a portfolio and start schlepping it about like a vacuum salesman. He targeted research departments of the University of Oregon and Oregon State and found he could corner startled professors and scientists in their offices long enough to listen to his spiel.
He established a clientelle that included Weyerhaeuser Co. John applied, assuming there was no chance he would be qualified, and was shocked when UMMZ director, Dr. Richard Alexander, invited him to an interview. In spite of this, he was hired. Since then, John has illustrated hundreds of research papers and other things at UM. I considered several criteria in selecting the subjects for each painting.

One of the students asked how they [the bacteria and fungi] got to the food after you put it in the refrigerator. After a few incredulous looks after discussing moldy bread, I threw up my hands and gave in. Use dates as guidelines for how fresh a product is so that you can plan to use the food within an appropriate amount of time. The dates are more likely to be indicative of food quality and how quickly it should be sold, and is not a deadline for using the product.

A look at the Artist
AP — Scientists are using information gleaned from both illegal ivory art and elephant dung to provide clues that could help save the lives of pachyderms that are being slaughtered for their tusks in Africa. The wildlife detective work involves cutting up seized artifacts including bangle bracelets and statues of Chinese deities and subjecting them to carbon dating to determine when the elephants were killed.
DNA from the ivory art is then compared to a DNA database derived from elephant dung to pinpoint where they lived. The chips will be analyzed by scientists at Columbia University and the University of Washington. Previous work by the researchers has provided valuable information to focus poaching law enforcement in Africa and prosecute ivory traffickers elsewhere.
Once numbered at more than a million, the population of African elephants fell 30 percent between and , to about , , according to the Great Elephant Census funded by wildlife organizations.

June 4, By Love Engineer Editor 27 Comments Shares There is all types of engineers out there and each of them can vary in personalities. But like all men they are simple. But like with any man they have their needs as do women. When dating an engineer you have to remember they think analytical and practical. Logical thinking will always prevail over the romantic gestures. This type of thinking is excellent for a life partner if you are seeking marriage or a long term relationship that is stable.
In my book I rather pick stable and practical person, such as an engineer to have a relationship with then a romantic that is unreliable, commitment phoebe who is in and out of your life. This does not mean engineers are not romantic, however more so by the book romantic such as going to look at sunsets, giving red roses or taking you on a trip to napa valley for the weekend.

The full dendrochornological potential of the park, however, has not yet been tapped. Dendrochronological research on archeological and living wood in the park holds the potential to more accurately date building construction phases and provide insights into climate changes and human adaptation to these changes. Since , I have been involved in an archeological tree-ring dating program that focuses on collecting samples from some of the last datable beams remaining in the park.
This project involves five separate sub-projects. Approximately previously unanalyzed specimens have been located and sent to the LTTR. Although the analysis of those specimens is ongoing, dozens of new dates have already been obtained. The second goal is to collect new tree-ring specimens from back-country cliff sites that still contain datable wood.
In addition to the five well known Mesa Verde cliff dwellings that are open to the public Balcony House, Long House, and Step House on Wetherill Mesa; Cliff Palace and Spruce Tree House on Chapin Mesa , there are nearly documented cliff sites within the park boundaries, ranging from small masonry granaries, to large cliff sites.
